LEARNING FROM THE HOLOCAUST

Through CORA Services, members of the Fegelson-Young Post No 697 Jewish War Veterans and Holocaust survivor Daniel Goldsmith visited today to bring history alive for our 7th and 8th grade students. Mr. Goldsmith shared his harrowing experiences of being loaded on a rail car in Belgium, escaping and then hiding with the help of Catholic organizations. He also reminded us of a harsh reality that our students "are among the last generation that will ever hear or see a Holocaust survivor speak" of the suffering, intolerance, evil and annihilation of millions at the hands of the Nazis. Mr. Goldsmith was also a witness featured in the documentary "Auschwitz," produced by USC Shoah Foundation founder Steven Spielberg.

Vice Commander Allan Silverberg encouraged the students "to become righteous human beings by speaking up when you see something wrong or someone unfairly treated." Never so true is the quote by George Santayana: "Those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it."

We are so grateful to Mr. Goldsmith and the Veterans of Post 697 and also to Rebecca Holtz of CORA for a powerful lesson in ensuring a better world for future generations.
